Wow. In the transcription project, I just did a bunch of old poems from my teenage years. Crap. Crap. CRAP. Crap. And then this one with a little bit of potential that I wrote when my crush/girlfriend/”it’s complicated” started dating my brother. I may actually have to rework that into something I’m not ashamed of.

I’m feeling very ashamed of my terrible writing habits, especially when compared to Allena Tapia’s $1500 Day Every so often I realize that I’m not making anything of my writing because I have no discipline.

I’ve been doing a bit of reading on the writer education blog circuit, and I’ve found a few winners.

Do check out Ray Rhamey’s for some excellent first page critiques and to hear the first chapter of his novel “The Vampire Kitty-cat Chronicles.” (He’s running a contest promo, by the way)

Speaking of promo contests, Juliet at Writer Unboxed is giving away a few copies of her soon-to-be released series, so go check it out.

0000hrxb

So here is what I learned last weekend:
Do not let GrayCub mix the drinks. Do not mix phych meds with alcohol. When you’ve decided you’ve had enough, say so in a firm, loud voice and go immediately to sleep. Do not drink because a pretty girl wiggles at you and says please, or because some anonymous figure on the other end of an IM says so, or ever include alcohol in kinky anything.

I’m not posting the rest of what I wrote, because it alternates between the slightly gory birthing scene that you may or may not make out from my last post, and a bleary commentary on the drunken goings on of myself, GrayCub, and Mr. Silver. Hmmm, and a bit of weird speculation the faceless-bad-influence, Etcet.

The end result? The worst hangover of my entire life, the realization that my bad blood could easily make me an genuine alchie, several hours of blackness in my memory, bruises and floor burn, a big block of stuff I deleted from my NanoWriMo word count. Also, the painfully sober Mr. Silver says that Gray and I can be mean drunks. He was mad. He may still be mad. *shiver* Oh, and there were clothing casualties. I’m still not sure where my bra went.

Maybe, if you DONATE $100 or more, I’ll give you the transcript of the night.

Write-In: Hooked on Colfax (Pre-show)

  • Posted on November 3, 2008 at 6:59 pm

Today’s Starting Word Count: 3393
Today’s Word Count Goal: 6750
Today’s Nano Average Goal: 5000
Word Count at the time of Writing: 4010 (Track)
Current Funds Raised: $25 (Donate)

The first write-in at the Hooked on Colfax coffee house starts in a little over an hour. I’m planning to attend, if for no other reason than to get caught up on my word count. I’m a little behind since the landlord had someone in to spray for bugs. We had to keep the kitten out of the bug spray.

Anyway, I’m nervous. Meeting my peers. I’ll let you know how it goes.

One Thousand Fifty-one. Well Begun.

Bits of advice from an inexperienced Nano: choose between the Halloween party and starting Nano ASAP on the first. The Halloween hangover will not leave you at your most creative or productive. Also, if you write using a pen name, be sure to do your fundraising with your real name. If you aren’t careful about that your friends and family will have no idea who is hitting them up for money!

I’ve written my first thousand words. I know that it doesn’t seem like much of a mile marker, but there are days when I can hardly force myself to write 100 words. I write poetry where I feel justified in stopping before I reach 50 words. I’m out of practice with prose, thanks to laziness, tech writing, and a stretch of poetic outlet. 1000 word feels like a real accomplishment!

I’m currently working on an expositive prologue written from the perspective of the antagonist. Call it ”Why I Went Bad” by Naughty McMeanie-Pants. I’m setting up the inciting incident, the Black Mother laying her curse, and attempting to do so in such a way that the reader sees this fantastic, over-powered, over-blown, vain, wicked, self-centered beast as a victim right up to the moment when she shreds the only scrap of moral fiber she had left. I’m hoping to get in another five pages before I call it a night.

Yep. I Suck at This

Well I’m all moved. I have a new roommate with a new kitten. Lucky me!

NanoWrimo is coming up, so I’m “conditioning” for that. Look for more posts (more that zero is easy to accomplish), more poetry, more tech and more of everything in the near future, Be prepared to be inundated with Nano stuff, though, because that is the major creative outlet I’ll be focusing on for the next 9 weeks. You’ll (hopefully) see character studies, hear my moments of procrastination and dread, and maybe, just maybe, even read excepts of the novel itself.

Am I promising more than I can deliver? Probably.

Lovies!

Geek Poetry

I’ve always considered myself a fine blend of the geeky math/science/tech mind and the nerdy lit/language/art mind. Today I felt the need to demonstrate that blend with this exceptionally geeky poem:

I’m working on a series about the loss of a child. I’ve got several finished, but I’m starting to hit a wall.

I’m also working a poem about a relationship at a sudden and painful end. You’ve heard of a person with bottomless eyes? Well, what happens when you finally hit bottom?

A third currently in the works is about the temptations faced when a woman first looks into a particular set of blue eyes, using the running metaphors of gemstones and religious over tones of temptation. I’m hoping to allude to “Sympathy for the Devil” and “Personal Jesus” if possible.

The last project on my poetic list this week is tentatively titled “Touch.” Sitting across the room from a love you cannot have, all you can think of a moment’s touch.

Yes, yes. Sappy love poems and themes that have been beaten to pulp. It’s what I feel like writing today.

NanoWriMo ‘07 Wrap Up

I suck. I suck. I really really suck.

I think I’m going to try doing my own writing month early next year. I can’t seem to dedicate enough time to writing with the holidays ramping up and the semester coming to a close. I got about 20,00 word, 2/5 of the desired total.
