Photo Essay

  • Posted on January 24, 2007 at 3:54 pm

Advanced composition is a class for developing style and incorporating different modes of communication into our writing. Project #1: Photo Essay. Pick a photo from the provioded list (edit it if you like) pair it with text you borrow from some other source, then write 200 words to go with it, in the style of your borrowed text. Cool!

Well, here is my photo and my borrowed text. The photo is a croped and colored photo by Mary Ellen Mark, and the quote is from the testimony of Kirt Gerstein, an SS officer who gathered information about the concentration camps and passed it to the Allies.

What should I say with my 200 words? Any ideas? I’m thinking of telling a bit more of Officer Gerstein’s story, because it’s so tragic, but I could be even more political, if that’s possible. Share with me!

eWriteLife’s Writing Resolution Project
1) List 5 I Want to Write About

  1. The Tenth Mountain Division
  2. Crafts
  3. Pregnancy/Fertility
  4. A haunted Cosmia halfling
  5. The business of writing

2) From this list, pick one topic (e.g. “crayons”). Then write, “I want to write about (crayons) because…”
I want to write about (#4) a haunted Cosmia halfing because the inspiration for my story is more bothersome than a housefly on a hot day. I want this story out of my head, on paper, and preferably printed by someone who will pay me!
3) List 3 major writing goals (e.g. “Get a short story published this year in an online publication.”). Just remember to set realistic but challenging goals.
Well, I’ll gladly steal the sample so…

  1. Get one (1) short story published this year by a print or online publication.
  2. Completely outline one (1)novel
  3. Earn a value equal to the total rent due each month through freelance writing.

4) Give yourself a deadline and a possible reward.

  1. Publication agreement by no later than Dec. 1, 2007. Reward: A new bracelet: something pretty, maybe Tahitian Pearls.
  2. Complete Outline by June 15, 2007. Reward: New keyboard. More RAM.
  3. Monthly earnings to equal rent for three consecutive months by June 30, 2006. Reward: Fancy Date with hubby that hits the trifecta: Event, Dinner, & Activity

5) Complete this sentence: “One day, I hope I’d be a __________ writer. This will happen when…”
One day, I hope to be a full-time freelance writer. This will happen when I am motivated and disciplined at the same time.

[repost] Tips & Leads

Hey there! I write the Denver Blog for HotelsByCity.net. It’s a hotel booking site, like Priceline or Travelocity, and the blog is generally aimed at folks traveling to our great city. It a fairly new project and I’m hoping the devout readers of the Denver LJ might have some tips or leads for me. What is your favorite hang out? Any particularly excellent shopping, spas, clubs or events our tourists should know about? Anything they should avoid like the plague? I’m trying to focus on places unique to Colorado that embrace this area’s urban-granola attitude. Planned entries include a review of the Curious Theater Company’s Aphrodisiac, Top 10 Spas in Denver, and regular restaurant and night club reviews.

The blog updates about twice per week. I’ll link back here and to you in the entry if I take your suggestion. Thanks for your help, fellow Denverites!

EDIT: So, is posting this OK? I want all the information I can get, and I know that networking is the primary way that blogs get noticed. I’ve been doing my footwork solo until now, and would love to get leads about new and interesting places from the general population. Are there any other ways that I could track down places and events to review?
